As per Dave's LJ. I know at least 2 people who will find this way too funny:
| | The Backrubber Deliberate Gentle Sex Dreamer (DGSDm)
Lusty but indirect. Kind, but also using friendship as a means to sex. Oh, that feels gooood. You are The Backrubber.
We call you "The Backrubber" because you straddle that fine line between coming on to someone and just treating her nicely. Backrubs are just one example; you'd meet for coffee, or talk about books/movies, or even argue a little bit, all the while mostly preferring to screw.
Your exact opposite: The Vapor Trail Random Brutal Love Master | Your indirect approach is not some evil trickery, but rather a result of your open mind. You'd enjoy either love or sex, but the latter definitely doesn't require the former. While you are responsible and ambitious, you absolutely DON'T have uptight views on relationships. So ultimately, you just enjoy a woman, and let things take their course. If she wants you, great. If not, that's fine too.
Though you're not thinking too much about Love at this point in your life, odds are, when the time comes, you'll be very happy settling down. Your ideal mate is gentle and horny, just like you.
ALWAYS AVOID: The Peach

Take the travelling salesman problem (TSP). Since TSP is in NP-Complete and by defintion in NP, if you can find a polynomial algorithm then P = NP by definition. The solution is simple. In the future the salesman can teleport to each city thereby completely bypassing streets altogether. The path would be found in polynomial time by simply choosing a city you haven't been to and teleporting there making TSP an element of P. You do this by adding all cities to a list and then removing the city from the list when visited. This reduces to O(n) which is polynomial.
Therefore P = NP... QED.

» Can't Sleep...
I had an interesting night... I don't really know if I want to explain it here because its just so bizarre. Its bizarre in contrast to what usually happens in my life. It was not a bad night at all. It started off good and stayed good until about midnight then it dipped a bit and then shot up to great around 12:30-12:45ish.
I definately have a new sense of confidence in myself. However, I'm slightly confused and a little scared. Mostly confused... the scared is just in the back of my mind its not an overwhelming thought. Like everything I need to be patient and it'll sort itself out... in the meantime I'm stuck staying up late with that stupid anxious feeling you get in your gut.
Weird...

» [DESIGN PROJECT LOG] Possible home made synchronization
Main assumptions: constant trip delay, zero packet loss (using these for simplicity... can be extended later)
Two different solutions.
Server Side:
-keep an IDictionary(Node,AugmentTime), play packet at time t = ArrivalTime + AugmentTime. -slowest connection has 0 AugmentTime, fastest connection has largest AugmentTime.
Therefore, in theory with zero packet loss all notes will be played upon the arrival of the longest packet. In practice it will be more complicated then this but this is just a base to work with.
Client Side:
-keep an augment time, delay sending all notes by the augment time.
Both augment times on the server side and the client side will be determined in a setup (synchronization) phase.
Problems:
The assumption of constant trip delay and zero packet loss are only valid on small LAN. Over an open network zero packet loss is too strict an assumption. Constant delay can still be achieved but more then likely you'll have variable delay. The solution to the variable delay problem is to update the augment time every 5 seconds or so.

» A New Term
I realize the World Cup is long over but this just came to me while sitting at work.
I officially would like to announce the addition of a new term which I discovered. I would like to petition this as a new word for the English language.
The term is:
zidane (zee-dan): v. zidaned, zidaning, zidanes
1. To viciously headbutt another person in the chest. "That guy over there zidaned me."
2. To headbutt. "I just can't seem to stop zidaning this guy."
3. To conduct oneself in the manner of Zidane near the end of the 2006 World Cup Finals. "Zidane zidaned Materazzi."
I take all credit for this term from now on.

- West Eglinton FC -
We are currently in second place in the league with 21 points with a record of 7-2. We have won 7 straight after losing our first two games and are currently only 4 points behind the undefeated first place team. (Although they aren't REALLY undefeated since we beat them in the league cup game, but anyways.) We are playing really well and we are just coming off a 3-0 victory against some old high school friends. Its my third shutout of the season and I'm only one shutout behind the goalie who plays for the first place S.C. Lusitania (I would have more shutouts except for a stupid goals scored in the final minutes of 3 of our games, two due to penalty shots and one stupid goal on my part). We are just past the half-way mark in the season, hopefully we can keep up the good work and possibly capture first place heading into the playoffs.
- Design Project - (mostly for my own logging for when I do reports, skip if you don't like technical stuff but please read of you have input)
I was able to get a hold of a midi-usb controller and I hooked up Danielle's midi keyboard to my computer. I was able to use the Java Midi API to snatch the midi events from the keyboard and process metrics like note value, velocity and pitch. The midi keyboard sends a lot of timestamps, it appears to be every millisecond or so. This will cause a lot of overhead in processing but I don't see a way around it. I would have to create my own timestamps anyways, so its probably better to just use that instead of creating my own.
The processed midi event has been successfully transmitted to another point through the Java Socket API.
Next Problem: Synchronization of nodes. All nodes must start playing at the same time and be synchronized with the main hub to play their instruments. Pain in the ass to do (in fact, theoretically impossible). (NEED HELP! PLEASE IF YOU HAVE A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM LET ME KNOW)
Possible Solutions: -Use Java Net Time API to synchronize clocks and send a startAtTime packet (essentially a conductor packet if you want to turn it into and object oriented music paradigm), all nodes must start transmitting at said time... (Q: What is the resolution of the Net Time? second? millisecond?) -Java RTP. Usually used for streaming A/V but could be useful for QoS and on time delivery. Just encode midi signals in an A/V format. -Look at open source MMORPG code (this is essentially the problem I am trying to solve)
- Other Stuff -
As for other things... Its been pretty blah lately. I've had a bunch of projects to do at work so that's kept me busy, plus with soccer and my design project I really haven't been up to much. I'm supposed to be going to Ohio in September to visit family and go see an Ohio State football game, that should be fun.
Also, I'm applying to U of T for a position as a study group facilitator for first year students. Resumes have to be in tommorow and I still haven't done a cover letter or found a second reference... Ugh!
Anyways, that's all for now. Time for lunch.

» Lazio Demoted to Serie B
FRIGGIN' HELL!
Demoted plus a 7 point penalty. At least its not as bad as Juve getting stripped of its titles, demoted to Serie B and getting a 30 point penalty.... BUT STILL! Its Lazio for crying out loud! They haven't won anything in years! Also, lets point out that they almost faced relegation two seasons ago. If Lazio was that deeply involved with match fixing then why on earth did they almost go to Serie B through relegation?! BAH!
Now I'm angry!

We were having lunch today and just talking randomly and we got onto the subject of drive-in movie theatres and the make-out row in the back. I happened to say that I thought the whole idea of going to a drive-in theatre and then not even bothering to watch a movie and instead just making out in your car was just stupid. You are better off going to a parking lot and saving the theatre ticket, or even better staying HOME.
Then it moved onto a discussion of how even that was stupid because then you get the cops bugging you.
Me: "Bah, that's bullshit, I've never been caught by the cops."
James: "Well, don't you have to actually be doing it to be caught?"
So, the funny man got a nice jab in. It was a good one but we just kept talking and we got into some really weird subjects. For instance, one of the people got caught at a hotel downtown. I think he said it was the Hilton. He had gone to the top floor and the cleaner's caught him in the washroom. I told him he should have just said he was painting the walls and maybe they would have let him go. :P
----------------------------------------
One other funny today:
My Boss: "Hey Matt, do you want to go to London (I think he meant London, ONT because we haven't opened our England division yet), there's a Hooters there that needs some startup done on it."
Matt: "Sure, I'd love a free trip to London. However, I have no idea how to startup Hooters."

» Wedding Weekend
So this weekend is my cousin's wedding. Its the first real wedding of our immediate family. We have a core group of family members who I've grown up with and my cousin Laura was one of them. We all used to hang out together at festas and what not, so this is a very important occasion for our family.
I'm in charge of the A/V for the reception and I had fun with the projector at home. I had it hooked up to my laptop in my room and I was using the projector to create a big screen on one of the walls in my room. I was playing chess and watching movies on it, it was fun.
However, I will be losing my room for the next 4 or 5 days due to the fact we have a bunch of family coming up from the States. We have family who live in Ohio and we often visit them for big occasions and they come up here as well. They're staying at my place and at my cousin's place around the corner. My room and my brother Peter's room are being used. Peter is sleeping with Adam in our old bunk beds while I get to sleep in the nice and chilly basement. I'm not complaining since my room is really hot in the summer so having a cool place to sleep will be nice.
Hopefully I'll be able to wake up on Sunday after the wedding since I have a soccer game to play. We're playing the last place team so it should be a breeze but weirder things have happened. Also, I'm missing our league cup game on saturday against the former first place team in the first division (we're in the fourth division to give you some perspective). Hopefully we can win. We beat a highly ranked team to get to the Quarterfinals, GO WEST EGLINTON.
In other news... LAZIO BETTER NOT BE RELEGATED! Stupid soccer scandal! Everybody knows Italian soccer is corrupt. BAH! I swear if Lazio gets relegated I'll be in a bad mood...

» CAMPIONI DEL MONDO!
Just for the record, Italy was one of my picks to win the World Cup this year and they did. However, we won't mention the fact that the other teams that I picked stunk!
Anyways, yesterday was by far the greatest day to be Italian. After watching the World Cup my cousin and I went around everywhere we could in his Jeep TJ in our Italian jerseys and our Italian flag. We went up to Woodbridge and I swear to you I have never seen such a huge traffic jam in my life. We were stuck in traffic for an hour and not only that but EVERY SINGLE CAR HAD AN ITALIAN FLAG! It was insane. We had forgot to bring a camera but I had my camera phone and I snapped some shots.
Some notables:
-Guys standing with a sign saying: "Flash us, we're Italian" -Flatbed trucks with people riding in them -Three huge Mack trucks with people riding in the containers and blowing bullhorns along with the truck's main horn. -Getting flashed by some young girls (I wasn't quick enough to get a picture... sorry)
I'm having trouble getting the pictures off my camera so it might be a little bit before they're anywhere for people to see.

BEING AT WORK SUCKS RIGHT NOW!
Italy played Australia today and the game was tied until the 95th minute when Italy got a penalty shot and Totti scored. Before that Italy was playing with 10 men after idiot extraordinaire Marco Materazzi got sent off.
Seriously, I wish I could have watched this game. WORK SUCKS!
Also, with the Czechs out and the Netherlands losing in a circus match yesterday, Italy and Brazil are my only two picks left... oy.

» World Cup Update
So Italy is through to the second round with a convincing win over the Czechs. Group E was definately the most exciting group by far. Ghana providing a huge upset against the Czechs and then that rollercoaster/circus of a match between the US and Italy. The Czechs were one of my picks to at least make it through but it turns out Ghana was the better side and rightfully so. The Czechs did not live up to their ability and completely SUCKED the last two games.
I can't wait until tommorow because France has to beat Togo and hope that Korea and the Swiss don't tie. Nobody likes France anyways. That team is so old by soccer standards. Actually, old is an understatement. They're ANCIENT. They really need some fresh new players.
I really wish I could have watched the Italy game but alas I'm here at work.

I know I haven't updated in awhile, so what? Wanna fight about it?!
Anyways, I've been doing some thinking the past little while. I've mostly been taking in what a few of my closest friends have told me and coupled it with my own thoughts and I came to this conclusion: I am going to at least try to apply for my masters degree.
My plan is this.
Apply to teacher's college (York, U of T and Trent) AND the School of Graduate Studies at U of T. If I get into the graduate studies program then great! If not, then I'll hopefully get into a teacher's college and do that instead.
I wouldn't be getting a M. Eng persay. It would most likely be a M.ASc (applied science) in electromagnetics, a M.ASc in photonics or a M.Sc (theoretical science) in physics (more then likely specializing in either quantum physics or electrodynamics). Its pretty scary but considering all I do during my break at work is read up on this stuff it might be worth it just to at least try and get in. I have the marks that would at least be considered for a masters(I'm hovering on a B just below a B+, I'm literally on the border) so its possible. The only real problem I face is getting references from professors. While I frequently chat with many of the professors in the faculty most of them aren't in the research area for which I want to apply so I don't know if they would be that helpful. At any rate, its kind of exciting but I know its a lot of work so I have to start planning my applications this summer.
On top of that I have to actually start working on my 4th year design project. Its already slightly underway. I found some stuff that could be useful on the software side. I have to pick up a midi keyboard and start playing with it and see if I can get it talking to a custom computer program. If I can do that then I'm on my way to actually getting this thing down. That's about 1/3 of the project (granted its the very easy 1/3).
------------------------------------------------------------
In other news West Eglinton FC started the outdoor season once again and after losing the first two games (4-2, 8-3... the second game was a nightmare for me) we are currently on a 3 game winning streak only allowing 1 goal in each of the three games and scoring enough goals that our striker Kent is currently the league leader in goal scoring. We are in 3rd place and its all a pretty tight race. We have a very good chance of making the playoffs this year if we continue to play like we are. Its very much the same situation as our indoor season in which we went on to get second place in the league. Hopefully we can do the same.
As for the World Cup, my four picks to win are as follows:
Italy, Brazil, Czech Republic and Netherlands
Italy because they have a young team that can play defence AND score.
Brazil because well... they have the most depth and talent of any team in the World Cup.
Czech Republic because they have Petr Nedved and Cech (probably the best goalie in the tournament). They have a strong team and if the 3-0 thumping of the US is any indication they are going to have a strong tournament.
Netherlands because they have awesome orange jerseys. Oh yeah, not to mention they have Robben, Cocu, Van Nistelroy, Van der Sar, van Brockhorst, van Persie, Sneijder, van Bommel... shall I continue? Its pretty much all of my favourite/AWESOME players. If only Van Nistelroy played for a quality team and not Manchester tsk tsk.... At any rate, the Netherlands finally have a team that could possibly keep pace with the likes of Brazil and the Czechs.
Anyways that's all, I should get back to work.

» Sandro is NEVER allowed to be unreachable EVER AGAIN!
Imagine receiving hundreds of e-mails every minute from the same person with the same message. Think, spam times a million. This is what 40 or 50 of our customers (as well as our own servers) are experiencing today. It all started when we had to swap our e-mail addresses to a new domain. One person decided to e-mail all of our customers to tell them of the name change. However, after doing this, for some reason a loop was created and we keep receiving error messages that the message didn't get through while all the customers continually receive the message that was sent. Its a self-perpetuating cycle between at least 4 or 5 servers that we haven't tracked down.
I've spent most of my day answering the phone trying to give people partial solutions in order to stop this bloody thing but nothing has worked. The best I can say is to put the message on the block sender's list and hope that everything sorts itself out. Thankfully, none of the customers have called and been really rude. They've all been curteous and understanding.
Hopefully we can find out where these things are coming from and stop it but at the moment there doesn't seem any end in sight. What a waste!
To make things worse, Sandro is in waterloo interviewing potential co-op students for when I leave in September. Talk about a pain in the butt.
